Thanks to all my visitors, comment leavers, llama givers and especially the watchers. You warm my tender etch-a-heart.
Bryan Lee Madden, Artist's Statement:
Long ago, when times were hazy, men were men and a handle of gin cost merely a dollar, there lived the tale of a twisted creature who would descend from the mountainside upon a village, offering deals to help the families of those in distress. No one would dare take the deal, for the price was grave and unknown. One day, a hopeless, penniless man, down on his luck with a newborn at home, set out into the forest to strike a deal. He was never seen again. That man was my father.
My granted ability is expelling art. My medium is a toy. It used to be paper, pencils, the stage, comedy; but now, it’s a vintage children's toy. I create art on the Etch-a-Sketch. “The World’s Favorite Drawing Toy” has been my canvas for only a short while, but in that time, I’ve hit upon something only a few people in the world ever have. I’ve learned to master the knobs. Everyone at one time has used the Etch-a-Sketch, and lots of staircases have been constructed upon them. I go further. Cities, structures, faces, landscapes -- all seen through the glass of my “magic screen.”
Taming the knobs takes time. Creating a work of art upon an etch-a-sketch can only be done slowly. Through patience, vision and perhaps a touch of ambidexterity, anything can be done upon my magic Etch.
